Plumbing Questions

  • How can I shut down my water heater?

If your water heater is leaking, making strange noises, overheating or failing to work, you need to shut it down immediately to avoid worse problems and possible flooding. Referring to the diagram above, follow these steps:

    1. Turn the gas or electricity off. Gas: Twist the dial on the top of the thermostat from the ON to the OFF position. Then twist the gas valve OFF. Electric: Switch the circuit breaker for the water heater to the OFF position.Do NOT attempt to disconnect wiring.
    2. Turn the water supply off. Turn the handle on the water valve CLOCKWISE until it stops. To verify that the hot water is off, turn the nearest fixture to hot inside the house. Within a few minutes, or less, the hot water supply should cease. If the water does not stop, turn off the main water valve for the entire house.
    3. Drain Water Heater. a) Attach a garden hose to the drain valve at the bottom of the tank. b) Make sure the hose connection and hose are in good condition to avoid scalding from hot water. c) Run the other end of the hose to a lower place where you can drain rusty, hot water without causing damage. d) Open a hot water faucet in the house to let air enter the tank as the water heater drains.
    4. OPEN THE RELIEF VALVE. Flip handle so it is sticking straight out or up. (CAUTION: Scalding hot water).
    5. Call Class Act Plumbing, Heating & Air for service.
  • What is a High Efficiency Toilet?

Today's valve toilets use 1.28 gallons of water per flush or less. Brand-new cutting-edge high-efficiency toilets today are readily available with gravity-flush, pressure-assist, and flush-o-meter valve mechanisms. Pressure-assist toilets, which compress air at the top of the refill tank to increase the flush speed, use as little as 0.8 gallons of water per flush (gpf) and typically attain excellent performance. This is 50% below maximum gpf of 1.6 set by the Energy Policy Act of 1992.

  • Is it safe to flush baby wipes or tampons?

No! Baby wipes will flush but they do not travel through the septic system properly and are not biodegradable. All sanitary products are not biodegradable and are also bad for sewer plants.

  • How do I know if I have a plumbing leak?

Any visual staining on your ceiling or walls should be a cause for concern. Often, a slow leak won't show itself for some time. If you see any sign of discoloration on your ceiling and walls, it's time to give us a call to look for leaks.

  • My garbage disposal won't turn on, do I need a new one?

Not always. Sometimes it could just be stuck. The disposal should have come with a unique wrench that can be placed on the underside to try and turn it and get it unstuck by hand. If this doesn't work, or you cannot locate this tool, it's time to give us a call!
